What Hard Water Does in a Las Vegas Home
Southern Nevada water carries a heavy mineral load, and it works on everything it touches.
Scale builds inside pipe, narrowing it and dropping your water pressure over time
It wears at copper from the inside, which is where pinhole leaks come from
It coats the inside of water heaters, shortening their life and causing that rumbling sound
It stiffens and wears out faucet cartridges and shower valves, which is why they start dripping
It scales tankless heat exchangers, reducing output and causing mid-use shutdowns
It shortens the life of dishwashers and washing machines
Soap does not lather well, so you use more of it
It leaves spotting on glass, fixtures, and dishes
It leaves skin and hair feeling dry
Softener or Filter? They Do Different Jobs
This is the most common confusion we run into.
A softener deals with hardness. It is what protects your plumbing and appliances from scale.
A filter deals with what the water tastes and smells like, and what is in it beyond the hardness minerals.
If you want your pipes and water heater protected, you want a softener. If you want better drinking water, you want filtration or reverse osmosis. Many homes here do both, with a softener for the house and reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap.
Signs You Would Benefit From a Softener
White crusty buildup on faucets, shower heads, and around drains
Spotting on glasses and dishes out of the dishwasher
Soap and shampoo not lathering the way you expect
Stiff laundry and colors fading faster
Low pressure at shower heads from scaled openings
A water heater that rumbles or has needed early repairs
Fixtures that start dripping within a few years of installation
Dry skin and hair after showering
The process of installing water treatment
Maintenance for softeners and water treatment in Las vegas
Softeners: keep the brine tank topped with salt, and have the unit checked periodically
Whole home filters: cartridge changes on a schedule based on the system
Reverse osmosis: filter and membrane changes, typically annually for filters and less often for the membrane
We can handle filter changes if you would rather not
Water softener and treatment faqs
-
A softener loop is pre-plumbed piping, usually in the garage, that lets a softener be installed without cutting into the main line.
Many Las Vegas homes built from the 1990s onward have one already
Older homes usually do not, which means we install the connection as part of the job
If you are not sure, we can tell you in a few minutes
If you are planning a repipe, that is the right time to add a loop
-
Which system and how thorough
Capacity, sized to household and water use
Whether a softener loop exists or has to be plumbed
Where it is going, and whether drain and power are nearby
Whether you are combining a softener with reverse osmosis or filtration

Most homes here benefit from one. Our water is hard enough that scale shortens water heater life, wears out faucet cartridges and shower valves, and builds up inside pipe. If you are seeing white crusty buildup on fixtures, that is the hardness.
-
A softener removes the minerals that cause hardness, which is what protects your plumbing and appliances. A filter improves taste, smell, and quality. They solve different problems, and a lot of homes here use both.
-
They reduce scale buildup by changing the form of the minerals, but they do not remove them, so the water is not actually softened. They are often marketed as softeners, so it is worth knowing the difference before you buy.
-
It should. Sediment from hardness is what builds on the bottom of a tank and causes the rumbling and early failure. On a tankless unit, softened water dramatically slows scale in the heat exchanger.
-
If you want the best drinking water quality, yes. It removes dissolved solids that other filters leave behind. Most people install it at the kitchen sink rather than for the whole house.
-
It depends on capacity, household size, and how hard your water is. We will give you an idea for your specific setup when we install it.
-
Call and ask. It depends on the unit and whether it suits your setup.
