Common Toilet Noises That Call For Repair

Toilets seem to act up at most inconvenient times—during a dinner party, in the middle of the night, when everyone in the house has the flu. Sometimes it’s water everywhere, and other times it’s a strange noise never heard before.

Major issues with toilets can turn a routine scenario into an unsanitary nightmare, costing time and money. To avoid that, homeowners should be familiar with the typical noises that call for a professional toilet repair.

The foghorn

  • An older toilet may produce a unique foghorn sound if its metal ballcock-style fill valve has a loose washer. To check if this is the problem, open the toilet tank and flush it. If it sounds like a foghorn, raise the fall ball above the tank. If the noise stops, the problem is most likely with the washer. In case the ballcock isn’t sealed, there is the option to change the washer. A long-term solution is to consider changing the valve itself.

The hiss

If the toilet makes a hissing sound, the problem is likely running water. The trick is to determine where the leak is in the system. In most cases, it is caused by one of two defective parts.

  • Fill valve is miscalibrated - take the lid off the tank and identify the ballcock or plastic buoy floating on the water. If it has been adjusted to stay on top of the overflow tube, the water will always fill more than this spot and then drain. To solve the problem, adjust the fill valve or ballcock’s height to below the overflow tube.

  • Worn flap valve - If the valve at the tank’s base has worn out, chances are it’s allowing water to drain from the tank into the bowl. If this is the case, turn off the water supply behind the toilet and flush the toilet to drain the water. When the tank is empty , inspect the valve. If it is brittle or cracked, it needs to be replaced.

The gurgle

  • The gurgling sound is among the least familiar, yet most ominous sounds a toilet makes. This type of noise is created whenever air escapes back into the toilet and can indicate major plumbing issues, like a blocked main line. This is not a noise a homeowner can ignore and requires a professional plumber to snake the line to determine the cause.

When in doubt, the plumbing team at Adaven Plumbing can help resolve toilet noises and their causes.

typical Reasons for a Leaky Toilet

Leaking toilets are frustrating because there are various reasons they may leak. At Adaven, we don’t want our customers to hassle with toilet concerns or the inconvenience of water damage should there be a major leak.

There is value in our clients understanding toilet mechanics and basic toilet maintenance. In doing so, we help them prevent extreme damage to their homes. According to Conserve H2O, water leaks account for approximately 14% of all water use in the average American home, and the toilet is one of the most likely places to find them.

Troubleshooting a leaking toilet

There are a number of components that can wear, rust, or break that cause a toilet to leak.

  • Worn washers/bolts: Toilets have two bolts that affix the tank to the bowl. These wear over time, and when they can no longer serve as designed, water leaks onto the floor.

  • Tank-bowl gasket: A three-inch rubber gasket works with the two large bolts and corresponding washers to keep the toilet tank affixed to the bowl. This gasket degrades over time whether from age or chemicals in the water. When the gasket no longer seals the joint between tank and bowl, water will leak.

  • Rust: Rust is the leading cause of deterioration in water fixtures and pipes. Since the components in a toilet tank are metal, they rust and break down. When this happens, the homeowner needs to have them replaced.

  • Cracks in the tank and bowl: Cracks in toilet tanks and bowls are common and can happen with no provocation. Even fine, hairline cracks will leak. Be mindful that toilets are made of porcelain and take care with putting anything on the tank or dropping anything on it.

  • Float: The float is the plastic sphere affixed to a rod that floats inside the tank and acts as a shut-off switch for filling the toilet tank. This part and the flapper will likely need to be replaced during the lifespan of a toilet. If either is not working effectively, water will leak and the toilet will constantly run, wasting water.

  • Feed line: The feed line is the line that supplies water to the toilet. This line is visible at the back of the toilet and is easy to check for leaks. Also ensure that the line is snugly connected to the water valve.

  • Overflow Tube: The overflow tube’s job is to relocate water if the tank overflows. If this tube is blocked, the toilet may overflow onto the floor.

These initial troubleshooting tips can help a homeowner determine how quickly an Adaven plumber needs to attend to the problem and help us with their toilet repair.
